Team coaching and team development

building collaborative and collective mindsets

Team Coaching
Team High Five

JS-International has been working with leadership teams for nearly 20 years.   In that time we have defined our work using the umbrella concept of team development.   More recently we have been working with leadership teams with a focus on team coaching.

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) has created a working definition of Team Coaching:

“Partnering in a co-creative and reflective process with a team and its dynamics and relationships in a way that inspires them to maximize their abilities and potential in order to reach their common purpose and shared goals.”

We consider ourselves to be systemic and transformational coaches and we work in partnership with leadership teams to unleash their skills to enable them to be:

  • able to embrace innovation

  • change resilient

  • coaches themselves

  • more disruptive thinkers

  • more strategic

  • digitally fluent

  • tackle the challenges effectively of the next decade

We see the coach as an external disruptor and thinking partner and critical to the success of the identified leadership teams.  Their lens is about working with a: “whole team, both when they are together and apart, in order to help them improve both their collective performance and how they work together, and also how they develop their collective leadership to more effectively engage with all their key stakeholder groups to jointly transform the wider business”.  Peter Hawkins (“Leadership Team Coaching” 2014).

With the perspective of a behavioural scientist, Harvard professor Francesca Gino writes in the Harvard Business Review (April 2019): “what’s needed is a psychological approach”. In studying successful sustained collaborations across a wide range of industries, Gino identified six techniques where people can be supported to work together which we believe is the key role of the team coach:

  1. Help people to listen, not talk

  2. Develop people to practice empathy

  3. Make people more comfortable with feedback

  4. Enable people to lead AND follow

  5. Speak with clarity and avoid distractions

  6. Focus leaders to have win-win interactions

Our team coaching enables relationship building within and across teams and strengthens confidence by providing less risky sounding boards for the pain of mistakes or missteps.   The team coach provides the “psychological safety” required to make leadership teams successful.   A critical question we always ask is: “what is disconnected that needs to be connected”.

Our Approach

In terms of approach in working with leadership teams, we have a focus on behavioural development, steered by our CORE© leadership philosophy (CORE stands for collaboration, ownership, respect and engagement).  However, we also believe that this focus on behaviours is necessary but insufficient.  It is also about the ecosystem.  So, part of the team coaching assignment focuses on “structural coaching” looking at the key conditions necessary for high performing teams.
